Why We Need Beauty Most During Difficult Seasons

Lately, it feels as though the world has become increasingly noisy.

There is always another headline.

Another notification.

Another thing demanding our attention.

Even here in the middle of a heatwave, when everything feels slower and heavier, life somehow still finds a way to feel busy.

perhaps that is why I have been thinking so much about beauty lately.

Not beauty in the sense of perfection.

Not beauty in the sense of luxury.

But beauty in the things that help us pause.

The things that remind us there is more to life than rushing from one responsibility to the next.

Beauty is not frivolous

For a long time, I think many of us have been taught to think of beauty as something extra.

Something nice to have if everything else is already taken care of.

But I have come to believe the opposite.

Beauty is not frivolous.

Beauty feeds something inside us.

It reminds us to look up.

To notice.

To feel.

To remember that life is not made entirely of endless to-do lists, deadlines, worries and obligations.

Sometimes beauty arrives through a sunset.

Sometimes through birdsong.

Sometimes with a gentle breeze in the middle of a heatwave.

Sometimes through flowers growing in unexpected places.

And sometimes it arrives through the artwork we choose to live alongside.

The spaces we live in affect us more than we realise.

A conversation I had recently reminded me of this.

I found myself explaining that my surroundings matter enormously to me because they directly affect how I feel.

I suspect many people are the same.

Some rooms make us feel calm.

Others leave us feeling unsettled without us fully understanding why.

The colours we live with.

The objects we keep around us.

The images we see every day.

All of these things contribute to the emotional atmosphere of a space.

This is one reason artwork matters.

Not because every piece belongs in a museum.

Not because every wall must be filled.

But because the things we choose to surround ourselves with slowly become part of our everyday experience.

Why nature helps us reconnect

One thing I have noticed throughout my life is how often people are drawn back to nature during difficult periods.

We walk in parks.

We sit in gardens.

We watch birds.

We listen to water.

We seek out open skies.

Nature reminds us of something bigger than ourselves.

It slows us down.

It encourages us to notice.

And perhaps most importantly, it reminds us that beauty still exists, even when life feels difficult.

This is one of the reasons wildlife and nature feature so strongly in my artwork.

Not because animals are simply beautiful

But because they help us reconnect with wonder.

And wonder is something many adults quietly miss.

Not all beauty speaks to everyone

When I was younger, my mum had a famous print hanging on the wall.

It was a painting of a crying boy.

She absolutely loved it.

I never understood why.

To me, it felt sad.

I could not understand why someone would want a crying child hanging on their wall.

Yet she saw something completely different.

Neither of us was wrong.

And I thing that is one of the most fascinating things about art.

The artwork that speaks deeply to one person may leave another completely untouched.

Which is why choosing artwork is such a personal thing.

It is not really about matching a sofa.

It is about finding something that makes you feel something.

Bringing more beauty into everyday life

You do not need a gallery-sized budget.

You do not need a perfectly designed home.

You do not need walls filled with expensive artwork.

Sometimes bringing more beauty into everyday life starts with something much smaller.

A favourite photograph.

A plant.

A meaningful object.

A painting that makes you smile every time you walk past it.

A reminder of nature.

A reminder of wonder.

A reminder of who you are.

Because during difficult seasons, those reminders matter.

Perhaps more than we realise.

A quiet ending

When life becomes stressful, beauty is often one of the first things we stop prioritising.

And yet it may be one of the things we need most.

Not because beauty solves our problems.

But because it reminds us that there is still goodness, wonder and meaning in the world around us.

And sometimes that reminder is enough to help us take the next step forward.
