Why the Artwork You Keep Coming Back To Matters

Have you ever noticed yourself returning to the same painting over and over again?

Perhaps you've seen it online, walked past it in a gallery, or spotted it during an exhibition. You tell yourself you'll look at the rest first, but somehow your feet lead you back.

It's easy to dismiss those moments.

"I must just like the colours."

"It's probably nothing."

But what if it isn't nothing at all?

What if the artwork you're drawn to is quietly telling you something about yourself?

We don't always choose art with our heads

Many people think choosing artowrk should be a logical decision.

Will it match the sofa?

Will it fit the colour scheme?

Is it fashionable?

Those things have their place, but I've noticed something interesting over the years.

When people truly connect with a piece of art, they rately begin by talking about colours or technique.

Instead they say things like:

"It reminds me of somewhere I used to walk."

"I can't explain it, but it makes me feel peaceful."

"Every time I look at it, I notice something different."

Those aren't practical reasons.

They're emotional ones.

And they're often the reasons a piece stays with us long afterr we've walked away.

The paintings we remember often reflect something we need

Think about the photographs you've saved on your phone.

The places you've stopped to admire.

The sunsets you've watched a little longer.

The woodland path you couldn't resist photographing.

None of those moments happened by accident.

Something in them spoke to you.

Artwork can do exactly the same thing.

Soemtimes we're drawn to peaceful landscapes because life feels busy.

Sometimes wildlife reminds us to slow down.

Sometimes soft light gives us hope during difficult seasons.

The artwork isn't creating those feelings.

It's revealing something that already exists within us.

A simple exercise

I'd love you to try something.

Open the photos on your phone.

Find three images you've saved simply because you thought they were beautiful.

Now ask yourself these questions.

What colours appear again and again?

Do you naturally gravitate towards greens?

Soft blues?

Warm golds?

Gentle neutrals?

Our favourite colours often reflect the atmosphere we want to create around us.

What subjects keep appearing?

Wildlife?

Woodlands?

Flowers?

Mountains?

The sea?

Night skies?

There may be a pattern you've never noticed before.

How do these images make you feel?

Not what they are.

Not where they were taken.

Simply...

How do they make you feel?

Calm?

Hopeful?

Inspired?

Comforted?

Curious?

That feeling is often far more important than the subject itself.

We aren't just decorating our homes

When we choose meaningful artwork, we're doing something much deeper.

We're shaping the way our home feels.

We're creating little pauses in our day.

Tiny reminders to notice beauty.

Moments that encourage us to breathe a little more slowly.

The right artwork doesn't simply fill an empty wall.

It quietly becomes part of everyday life.

One of the best things about working in my art studio with the doors open is seeing people's reactions to my artwork. I always have a mix of artowrk in progress along with some finished pieces.

Seeing how people process what they are seeing is just simply a blessing.

I often hear comments such as:

"I don't usually like art but..."

"Everytime I look at this I am seeing something new."

"I can't put into words how amazing that is."

These are just some of the examples of what I hear, just take time to find your own version.

The next time you keep coming back...

Don't ignore it.

Whether it's a painting...

A photograph...

A woodland walk...

Or the same beautiful view you've admired a hundred times before...

Pause for a moment and ask yourself:

"What is it about this that keeps calling me back?"

You might discover that the answer has very little to do with the artwork itself.

And everything to do with the life you're hoping to create.

A final thought

The artwork that stays with us isn't always the loudest.

It isn't always the most expensive.

It isn't always the one everyone else is talking about.

Sometimes it's simply the piece that makes us feel most like ourselves.

And I think that's a beautiful reason to love art.

If you enjoy thoughtful reflections on beauty, nature, creativity and the stories behind my paintings, you might enjoy Raven's Reverie.

It's my little corner of the internet where I share new artwork, life in the studio and gentle reminders to notice the beauty that so often surrounds us.

You'd be very welcome.
