Whispers of Africa: The Story Behind My Collection

Zuri - Leopard (beauty, presence, and quiet power)
Zuri - Leopard (beauty, presence, and quiet power)

There is something about these subjects that asks you to slow down.

Not in a loud or demanding way...

but in a quiet, steady presence.

The kind that doesn't need to prove anything.

The kind that simply is.

And perhaps that is why I am drawn to them.

Because whether I am painting wildlife...

or the quiet strength within a woman...

I am always searching for that same thing.

Presence.

A Presence That Speaks Without Words

When I paint, I am not just painting what something looks like.

I am listening for something deeper.

A feeling.

A story.

A moment that exists beneath the surface.

Each piece begins slowly...

Not just with observation,

but with stillness.

Because these subjects - both animal and human - carry something more.

They hold:

  • memory

  • resilience

  • quiet strength

  • a sense of being deeply rooted in themselves

And my role is not to control that...

...but to allow it to be seen.

The Elephant - Memory and Gentle Strength

There is a softness in the elephant that people often overlook.

We see size.

We see power.

But underneath there is something far more profound:

  • memory

  • connection

  • emotional depth

When I paint an elephant, like Inkumbulo, I think about what is carried...

What is remembered...

What is held, even quietly.

There is a gentleness there...

one that feels deeply human

The leopard - Beauty and Presence

The leopard carries a different energy.

Stillness. Awareness. Precision.

There is no need for noise.

It moves with:

  • confidence

  • grace

  • quiet power

When I paint the leopard, I am not chasing realism for its own sake.

I am holding that moment of presence...

that feeling of being completely within itself.

This particular piece has recently been selected to appear in the June edition of Leisure Painter & The Artist magazine.

The issue has not yet been published, and I only received the news very recently...

...but it feels quietly significant.

Because the leopard does not seek attention.

And yet... it is seen.

The Women - Strength, Voice and Quiet Power

Alongside the wildlife, there are women within this collection.

Not as decoration.

But as presence.

Each one carries her own story.

She Who Speaks in Colour - currently entered into a competition - holds a kind of expression that cannot be contained.

Tumaini Mwanzo - meaning hope of new beginnings - this mother and child painting carries something softer...

a sense of protection, of continuation, of life moving forward.

And others, like Asha, hold the same quiet strength in different forms.

They are not separate from the animals.

They sit beside them.

Connected through:

  • resilience

  • stillness

  • presence

  • and a kind of strength that does not need to shout

Painting as a Process of Listening

This is a growing collection, with new pieces still being created and added to over time.

It has never been about speed.

Each piece is built slowly, in layers.

Time is part of the work.

Because meaning doesn't arrive all at once.

It reveals itself:

  • In the first sketch

  • in the ink

  • in the way colour settles

And somewhere within that process...

the piece begins to speak.

More Than Decoration

These works were never intended to simply fill a space.

They are created to:

  • anchor a room

  • soften a space

  • bring presence into everyday life

To be lived with.

To be returned to.

To be felt.

Seeing Them in Person

There is something that changes when you see a piece in real life.

The scale.

The depth.

The quiet detail that doesn't always translate through a screen.

Your Next Step

If a particular piece speaks to you, please message me directly for availability, pricing or to reserve an art piece. I'm currently in the process of adding works to my online store, for now I'm handling enquiries personally.

Selected pieces (Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and She Speaks in Colour) are currently entered into competitions. They can be reserved, or I can create a similar piece upon request.

A Final Thought

These subjects do not ask to be seen.

And yet... when we truly look, something shifts.

Perhaps that is what this collection is really about.

Not just seeing them.

But remember how to be still enough...

to notice what is already there.

Love & Light
